We spent the better part of the winter in Texas near the Austin area. One Saturday we decided to take a road trip and see where it would lead us. While we had a goal in mind, we were also ok if we didn’t make that goal. We wanted the day to unfold in whatever way it felt like. Taking off from San Marcos, Texas on farm roads, we first went through Lockhart, then decided to explore Bastrop, Texas.
We stopped in Lockhart, Texas to walk around a bit, but it was so sleepy. Maybe it was too early on a Saturday morning for much to be going on. Definitely too early to take in a BBQ restaurant, so onward we went. Then we hit Bastrop, Texas and we stopped to check it out.
Both of us were pleasantly surprised. We parked our truck and walked around the little downtown area of Bastrop, Texas stumbling upon a cute little bakery, Tough Cookie. With my love for bakeries, we had to venture inside. We delightfully sat down with a delicious coffee and cookie (both of which were vegan.) Yes, that’s right this bakeries caters to the health conscious and alternative diets with mostly vegan fare including vegan biscuits and gravy. Check it out when you are in town!
While in Bastrop, Texas, we overheard about a farmer’s market on Saturdays. Well, if you know us at all, we love farmer’s markets. We proceeded to grab our dogs from the truck and walk the mile or so down the road to visit the market. It was small since it is winter after all. But it still had dried local spices, plants, honey, jams, meats, local eggs and more! We were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed chatting with some of the vendors. We made a few purchases and went on our way.
Then we realized we were hungry for lunch. On our walk we noticed a food truck stand, Yoli’s, stating Mexican and Texas BBQ! Yes, that’s right. Mexican with Texas BBQ. It turned out it was delicious and we enjoyed our meal sitting in their covered picnic area. We highly recommend you stop here for a bite. You can even call ahead to order for quick pick-up!
Since it was such a pleasant day outside, we decided to check out the walking path along the river right in town. We knew the dogs would enjoy a walk and why not keep enjoying this quaint town?
It was a beautiful path nice views of the river and the neat bridge. There were places to sit and relax and easy access to the downtown area. The city planted bamboo to help with erosion which was a neat find. The boys enjoyed their exercise and sniffing time. We enjoyed being outside and the beautiful day! Win win!
We didn’t get to stop at the Bastrop State Park right outside of town. But we’re guessing it would be a nice place to camp. Go enjoy this neat little place not too far outside Austin! We think you’ll be pleasantly surprise like us.
Have you been? What did you like?
